Seminar: the lignin-first biorefinery

April 6, 2022

Louvain-la-Neuve, April 21, 14:00-16:00

Croix du Sud, Room « Ocean » (Building B, room B002) + online on Teams

Speakers: Bert Sels (KU Leuven), Maxim Galkin (Uppsala University), Iwona Cybulska (UCLouvain).

Lignocellulosic biomass (i.e. byproducts from the forestry and the wood industries, agricultural residues, and dedicated crops) represents the largest fraction of available terrestrial biomass, and must be valorized in dedicated lignocellulose biorefineries. Lignin, in particular, represents an alluring platform for the production of valuable chemicals.

Here, after a general introduction we will dive into the presentation of innovative “lignin-first” strategies, discussing the various challenges related to processing, analytics, safety, products funneling, LCA, etc. We will come up with a roadmap to upscale, and highlight the future challenges.

This seminar is a preface to the PhD defense of Filippo Brienza (open to all, SUD08, 16:30):

Extending the scope of reductive lignin depolymerization toward new feedstocks and innovative non-metal approaches

(The first published paper from Filippo’s thesis is published in Green Chemistry)
